Eva didn’t see them coming. As she finally began to fold her papers away, a man who was idly strolling along the promenade, gazing out to sea, was coming near. As he passed near, he stepped away from the shore. For a split second Eva thought he was going to ask her for the time, but as soon as he was close, the menace in his eyes told her everything. And then at her back, Eva felt the unmistakable pressure of a gun barrel pressing into her spine.

“Let’s walk, nice and friendly, to The Marbella Club. I think you’re familiar with it, Miss Roberts.”

Eva started to look around, and saw enough of the guy behind to know he had grey cropped hair. She smelt his thick citrus cologne. The walking man in front was a tall man with a thick mess of dark hair and dark European colouring.

“Ergil. Alan tells me Miss Roberts intends to cause us trouble. We’re going to walk her into the club, like three old friends taking a stroll.”

And it unfolded that way. Because Eva had no doubt in her mind that Ergil looked like the kind of serious, hollow-eyed man who would have happily killed her in the blink of an eye. The man with the grey hair was pressed close to her back, partly to hide the gun. Eva didn’t want to think about the rest of his motivation.
